Your description of the plot is giving me The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare vibes, though in that case it's a teenage colonial boy who's helped out by a Native American boy and his grandfather while his dad leaves (for about a year, too, I think) to bring the rest of the family to their claim.
