Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history.

The short answer is that I have a short one, at least when it comes to fandom online. I got an AO3 account in 2017; before then I'd never written fic, though I had been reading fic and lurking since my last year or so of high school. I read a lot of Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean fanfic, then moved on to Sherlock and eventually the Marvel Netflix shows. I discovered most of those fics through the TV Tropes Fanfic Recs pages, and as I read more and more I began playing out my own scenarios and what-ifs in my head, which I'd always done anyway, just never with the option of writing those stories down and sharing them online. And I didn't want (or thought I didn't want) to write my own fics for a good couple of years, since I figured that devoting so much time to unpublishable work--not that any of the original stories I was trying and failing to write back then were particularly publishable--would be a waste.

I eventually broke after going through a terrible stretch of writer's block. I'd read Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, which makes the point that it's more important to write what you want to be writing than to write what you think you should be writing, and I was also so miserable that at that point I honestly didn't care if I never wrote another original story again. My first fic wasn't especially good, and I never finished it, but it was an idea I liked, I had fun with it, and it opened up the floodgates: I wrote and wrote and wrote, more or less constantly, for the first time in years. After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out I found my way into that fandom, started actually interacting with people and making friends, and I haven't looked back (not much, anyway) since.

Fandom is in a lot of ways a mixed bag for me: even though I wish I didn't, I still do worry about wasting time and not working on more professional writing; putting a story up online means it's there, in all its awkward, typo-ed, too-earnest glory (which is the exact same problem I'd have with original work, and at least on AO3 I can go back and edit if I spot a really outrageous mistake); and there are certain parts of certain fandoms that I...really, really, profoundly don't click with. But all the mixed-bag elements are still part of why I love fandom as a whole--you don't need to write perfectly, or be very sure of yourself, or agree with every hot take that comes across your dashboard. There's a place for everybody, a place to create new stories and find new friends and love new stories, whether they happen to be meticulously line-edited or not.

Oh! And I went back to check fanfiction.net for the two fics--one LOTR, one POTC--that were the first I ever read all the way through. The LOTR one is Misfit in Middle Earth, about a grad student who falls into Middle Earth, misses out on most of the high romance, but ends up charting her own (fun and moving) course anyway, and the POTC one is Memories of May, a Barbossa/OC story that's also fun and moving, and the first in an (unfinished) series.

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself!

Hey! I've never gotten around to writing an actual introductory post for this journal and (let's be honest) probably never will, but here are the basics: I'm maplemood (on AO3 and DW, mapleymood on Tumblr); I'm in my 20s, almost (but not quite) through with college, and a big reader. I also write--in theory a whole bunch of things but in practice mostly fanfic.

Over the past couple months I've tried to be more systematic about writing up and posting my thoughts on the books I read. I'm still not very systematic about it. I love both fiction and nonfiction, especially nonfiction having anything to do with a.) true crime, b.) the age of sail, or c.) literary or cultural criticism, though overall I read more fiction. Recent-ish favorite authors include Jia Tolentino, Lindsey Barraclough, L.A. Meyer, Elif Batuman, Ned Vizzini, and M.R. James. I used to read much more children's and YA and plan on getting back on that this year.

Fandom-wise, my only real requirement is that I feel emotionally connected to the story in some way. Still, I do love an angsty found family dynamic or an angsty/problematical romance dynamic, and most of my fandoms reflect that. I got started in Marvel, especially the Netflix show 'verse and the Guardians of the Galaxy movies; I don't write in either anymore (at least not for now), but they'll always be some of my first loves, and I've got a special soft spot for them. These days I'm kind of ping-ponging between fandoms. The latest all-consuming obsession was Anais Mitchell's musical Hadestown, which I still love an absolutely unreasonable amount.

Some Other Stuff:

1.) My favorite Disney movie is Treasure Planet.
i.) On that note, if it's a book, movie, or show adaptation of Treasure Island, there's a good chance that I've at least heard of it; other favorite Treasure-Island-adjacent stories are Muppet Treasure Island (duh), the 1934 film version starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, and, of course, Black Sails
2.) I prefer used books to new books.
3.) I've been slightly obsessed with lighthouses since I was a kid.
4.) I do my best to never reread old writing, for a definition of "doing my best" that includes "sometimes rereading and almost always regretting it." I'm not the biggest fan of my finished work, especially the farther back it goes. But I do love the process of writing, and that just-for-a-second feeling of having finally pinned down exactly what you wanted to say.
5.) I love horror and ghost stories, the more gothic the better.
6.) Between Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, I'd have to go with Wuthering Heights, though I've read and loved both.
7.) I'm also slightly obsessed with vampires, pirates, podcasts, urban legends, musicals, Russian classical lit, and mermaids. In no particular order.

Day 15

Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it.

Well, I don't think my answer is all that different from anyone else's--I love the sense of community, I love that the challenge itself is low-pressure, and I love starting off the year with a bunch of prompts that give me an excuse to post about the things I love. I also love reading other people's posts, even though I have yet to keep up with them all; it's a great way to meet new and interesting people, and to find new reading material--I love that reccing all different types of things and all different types of stories is such a big part of this challenge. I've already read one of the books recced to me on my post for the Day 6 challenge (the fannish wish list) and absolutely adored it...and this was a book I might not have read, or would have taken a much longer time to get around to reading, otherwise.

Day 11

In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

Day 8

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

Here we go! Like last year, I tried to pick three that give a pretty good idea of the dynamics and types of stories I tend to write--basically, unexpected friendships, found family, and angst.

Witchwork (Penny Dreadful): Missing scenes from the episode "The Nightcomers" in s2; I absolutely loved the dynamic between Vanessa and the Cut-Wife. It's a wonderfully prickly female friendship with a touch of mother-daughter to it, plus plenty of angst. I had a blast writing this fic, and it's still one of my favorites.

i fought the law (and the law won) (Stranger Things): Max & Hopper friendship--Max is another fantastically prickly character, and pitting her against Hopper (who's no slouch in that department himself) was also a blast.

out of the dust (Star Wars): Canon-divergent AU where Han picks Rey up on Jakku when she's still a kid. Chewie and Ben are along for the ride, too, and Leia has a cameo. I tried out a couple different POVs in this fic, most of which I was pretty nervous over (especially Chewie's), but they all turned out at least somewhat to my satisfaction, and if I ever get the chance to, I'd love to write more of tiny, feral Rey.

Day 6

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Oh boy. I think this was one of the days I skipped last year--granted, I skipped a lot of days last year--because I've always felt so awkward just straight up asking for things. But this is a challenge, so:

1.) My fandom stocking is up here. Fandoms are Stranger Things, Penny Dreadful, Star Wars, and The Punisher, and I'd also love book recs!

2.) On that note, anybody who's watched Penny Dreadful (or any of these shows, really) and wants to gush about it is welcome to hit me up any time--I absolutely adore this show and it has a pretty small fandom. (And if you happen to like over-the-top Gothic horror with a strong found family element and haven't watched Penny Dreadful yet, I'd really recommend it!)

3.) Again: Book recs! Especially for books (middle grade, young adult, or adult) with a strong found family and/or loyalty element to them. I have an especially soft spot for middle grade and young adult fantasy--bonus points if it's creepy or weirdly charming (or both!). Realistic and historical fiction are great too, and I love a good romance.

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

...And I'm already falling behind, but I figure posting before the next prompt goes up counts; anyway, at least it will for me. I've read quite a bit of good fic lately, but for these recs I decided to go with a couple of my favorite Stranger Things fanvids, now that we've got the date set for season 3.

steve & nancy | africa: Sweet and slightly wistful, as any Steve/Nancy vid should be.

Eleven | White Flag | Stranger Things: A season 1 vid set to one of my favorite songs. "White Flag" is just perfect for Eleven and her emotional journey over the course of the season.

Eleven & Hopper | Time After Time: This video is perfect. I have nothing else to say.

Mike & Eleven | The Promise: A really sweet Mike/Eleven vid set to the When In Rome song; it also includes snippets of Eleven & Hopper and Hopper & Mike.

It's back. :) I had so much fun with this challenge last year and met some fantastic people, despite joining late and never completely catching up. I'm hoping to do at least a little better this year, so!

Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

I don't know that I have one specific happy place, actually. I spend a lot of time reading and writing in my bedroom, but since I also spend a lot of time in there doing and/or stressing out about doing homework and other school projects, it's not exactly a completely stress-free sanctuary. I have good memories of almost every library and bookstore I've ever been to, especially my college library and the bookstore that's within walking distance of it, though. And I love the ocean and beaches, especially Bethany Beach and Rehoboth Beach in Delaware; driving down there is always fun and weirdly peaceful, since you get to see the land go from very mountainous (or at least hilly) to pretty much postage-stamp flat. I love crossing the Bay Bridge, I love getting to the point where you can smell the ocean in the air, and I love sitting on the sand and watching the waves. Wading in is fun, too, though honestly I'm too jumpy to ever get that far--I've been bowled over a couple times and the sensation of being held under by the waves is always going to freak me out. But I still do love the water.

Fannishly, my happy place tends to be whichever book or TV show or movie I'm most obsessed with at the moment. This past year, that meant a lot of Marvel and Stranger Things, and also Star Wars, Sicario, and Penny Dreadful. I love stories with a strong sense of found family and also a strong sense of place--I need the feeling of being able to dip into a different world for a while. I'm pretty sure I first got hooked on this from being read The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings when I was younger, and even though they don't all have to be fantasy worlds anymore, my biggest soft spot is still reserved for those.

Better three days late than never. Right?

Day 15

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

Going with fandom in general for this one!

There you go. Not sure how much sense this makes (it's late again and I'm tired again). I just hope it gets across at least some of my gratitude. Really, when it comes to writing, I've never had a better experience.

Smooshing two together again!

Day 9:

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Went with three that define me as a creator. Kind of.  I think these stories all give a pretty good idea of what I tend to go for when I'm writing fic. So, in a word, tons of gen-y found family feels, and a smidge of shippy angst.

Mommy's All Right, Daddy's All Right (GOTG): If I'm remembering it right (and I'm probably not) I started this fic the night I got home from seeing GOTG Vol. 2 for the first time. I have a HUGE soft spot for genderbent AUs, and the idea of a tiny girl Peter growing up scrappy and a little broken on a ship full of Ravagers just grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let go. The main focus of the fic, obviously, is her relationship with Yondu. I loved thinking about how that dynamic might change with a Petra Jean versus a Peter Jason, but the funny thing is that, at the end of the day, the key parts of it (Pete's hatred of the way Yondu raised her, and Yondu's inability to communicate his love in any way anyone would consider healthy) didn't change all that much. Reading back over this story is a weird experience; there're things I would have definitely changed if I'd written it even a month or two later, but I do love it all the same.

Every Night You Stay (Stranger Things): A quick and messy fic set in the aftermath of the last episode of S2. Like the girl!Peter fic, this one has a huge focus on found family and I loved getting the chance to write dialogue for so many different characters at once. It's also a bit of an Outsider POV fic (since the entire thing is told from Nancy's perspective and she's observing how everyone else handles the trauma as well as her own feelings about it), and I love me a good Outsider POV story.

you know i can't just let you be (The Punisher): In general, I write more purely gen stuff than purely shippy stuff, but this story was my first completed attempt at a pairing I happen to love with all my heart and soul. I'm including it here for the angsty argument that ends with bed-sharing (otherwise known as my absolute favorite romance trope. Ever.)

Day 10:

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!

Found family. Found family all the way.

I don't know exactly why this trope gets me as much as it does, but I've loved it since I was old enough to start reading stories on my own (and probably even before then). There's just something about the idea of a band of scrappy and imperfect people drawn together (bonus points if they're reluctantly drawn together!) into their own scrappy and imperfect version of what a family means that gets me. Every time. Maybe it's because I like angst and family drama, and found families tend to have both in abundance. Going deeper, though, I guess I could say it's because the found family trope is a wonderful way to explore how complicated, loving relationships can grow between the most unlikely pairs of people. The ones you'd never, in a million years, assume would get along. And that's my very, very favorite thing.

I'd include recs, but about 95% of the stories (both original and fic) that I read feature some kind of found family, so it would be a long list. Off the top of my head, though, books by Ursula K. Le Guin, S.E. Hinton, Diana Wynne Jones, and Melina Marchetta are pretty often gold mines for this trope, [personal profile] sholio  writes wonderful found family fics (especially in the GOTG and Stranger Things fandoms), and two 2017 movies that (in my opinion, anyway) fit the trope to a T were GOTG Vol. 2 and Logan
maplemood: (stranger things)
Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

Smooshing two days into one post; spring semester just started and is already promising to get hectic fast, but I'm still hoping to complete as many days of the challenge as I can.

Day 6:

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback. (This will also double as my mini-rec post, since I skipped out on that day of the challenge.)

I left comments on three fics, two old favorites I never got around to commenting on before and one just-completed story I've been enjoying:

Like Tired Kites by paperclipbitch (Daredevil): My favorite Marci-centric character study, period. It does a fantastic job of showing both her hard edges and softer side. As a bonus, it's short enough to read all the way through in one sitting.

I am Condemned (I am Damned) by DoreyG (Daredevil): A post-season 1 conversation between Wilson Fisk and Daredvil that can be read as either gen or pre-slash; Fisk's voice is excellent.

like stars through the soul by TolkienGirl (Star Wars: The Force Awakens): A Reylo Scarlet Pimpernel AU! They're so many fun period details in this story and just the right amount of romantic tropey goodness. Also, BB-8 is a white-and-ginger Jack Russel terrier; that alone was enough to get me reading.

Day 8:

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

Honestly, I'll fall in love with any piece of original canon that gives me an unexpected twist, especially if that unexpected twist comes in the form of friendships/romances/any kind of relationship. My best examples from last year are the Yondu redemption arc in GOTG Vol. 2 (where we got to see that his relationship with Peter was far more loving than either of them let on) and Steve's moments of damn good babysitting in Stranger Things.
maplemood: (max)
Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018
Well, here I am, slinking in almost a week late. This challenge looked like so much fun, though; I needed to give participating in it a shot. :)

Day 5:

Recommend a fannish or creative resource.

Fannish:

Whenever I'm working on a fic, I tend to get wrapped up in the characters and their voices and forget about plot and setting details, so fandom wikis have been a lifesaver. At the moment my two favorites are the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki and, of course, Wookieepedia. They both include extremely detailed summaries of character backstories, plus they're fun to browse.

Creative:

For photo edits and collages, BeFunky is a pretty good (and free!) alternative to PicMonkey.
