Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year.

To start with, I thought I'd better look back over my goals for 2019, which were:

1.) Stay organized with school, stay on track, and keep up a regular study schedule.

I'd say 50/50 here? I am a bit more organized than I was last year, though I still can't say I've come up with a regular study schedule. I'm also a bit more willing to not have an extremely organized schedule, so long as I get things done when they need to get done and don't procrastinate too much, so I'll call this one a win.

2.) Read regularly.

This was dependent on a lot of other things, like schoolwork, time management, other projects, and just general stress, but overall I think I stuck to it pretty well--and cleared my Goodreads challenge by twelve books, which was nice.

3.) Write more! Try not to stress about comments and kudos.

I did write a good bit (I'm not going to check how many stories I wrote in 2018 vs. 2019; in that way lies madness) in terms of writing regularly and in terms of writing some longer stories; my longest was just over 12,000 words, which is pretty decent for me. I also plunged into quite a few new fandoms (new in terms of me writing fic for them, not necessarily new in terms of me discovering them, though there were a couple of those, too): Greek mythology, Black Sails, the Earthsea series, the Queen's Thief series, Ghost Quartet, Peaky Blinders, Eleanor & Park, Hadestown

Comments- and kudos-wise...I don't think I stressed about them too much? Especially towards the end of the year I was too stressed about other things to care too much (though obviously I always appreciate both), so there's that.

4.) This one is conditional on my actually getting and sticking with and original story idea, but: Write, or try to write, more original fiction.

Eh? Not really. Then again, I didn't have many ideas for original stories, especially ones I especially wanted to write, so I'm not too bummed over this one. I did try to write a couple, which I'll count as a win, since there've been years when I didn't even do that.

5.) Make sure you really have the time/energy/inspiration to follow through with a fic exchange before signing up.

Mostly stuck with this, though I did end up having to default from Yuletide. And the Hurt Comfort Exchange--otherwise, though, I had some good exchange experiences last year, both in ones I actually signed up for and ones I wrote treats for.

My 2020 goals are along the same lines, for the most part:

1.) Keep writing
2.) Read regularly--at least fifty books.
3.) Get through this last semester.
4.) Finish Anna Karenina.
5.) Get obsessed with more musicals!
6.) Keep improving, keep moving forward.

1.) especially is pretty broad--I don't want to give up on writing fic (certainly not now and probably not ever), but I also badly want to get back some of the ambition and drive I had to write original fiction--plus the work ethic to actually follow through on that ambition. At the same time, it's pretty ridiculous to freak out about not having reached your full potential at the ripe old age of twenty-three--I want to allow for the possibility of finally writing some original stories I'm happy with in 2020 without dooming myself to disappointment if it doesn't happen. We'll see.

Skipping Fandom Snowflake today in order to put up a short (and very late) list of goals for this year, but first I've got to say: We have snow! The weather forecast was calling for at least a couple of inches to fall over the weekend, but I kept my expectations low because we've had no snow up until now and it hasn't even been especially cold. But yesterday was BITTERLY cold, and today was just as cold; the snow started falling this evening and was still coming down steadily last I checked. It might end up making getting to school on Monday a pain, but for now I'm just glad to get some really wintery weather.

Okay, on to the goals. They aren't all too different from my goals from last year; since those were at least semi-attainable I don't think that's a bad thing.

1.) Stay organized with school, stay on track, and keep up a regular study schedule.

2.) Read regularly.

3.) Write more! Try not to stress about comments and kudos.

4.) This one is conditional on my actually getting and sticking with and original story idea, but: Write, or try to write, more original fiction.

5.) Make sure you really have the time/energy/inspiration to follow through with a fic exchange before signing up.

I'm not and never have been great at New Year's Resolutions, but sticking with what I've already been able keep up doing (for the most part) worked fine last year. 1.),  4.), and 5.) are new goals; I have a couple more specific goals for school, but they all basically boil down to getting more organized and disciplined. Original stories are tricky for me--there's so much anxiety associated with them that doesn't bother me as much when I'm working on fic, and so I really need to feel like an idea's worth it before going any further with it--but assuming I get an idea I'd like to give writing them another shot. 5.) is because I had to default on a few exchanges this year, which made me feel awful, but apparently didn't stop me from signing up for others when I really didn't have the time for them. I do love participating in exchanges, but I need to be more realistic about my ability to get things finished on time.

1.) Get back into the habit of posting. Also get back into the habit of commenting and interacting with more people around here. This is one of those goals that I know will fall apart at some point (because college), just hopefully not so completely next year. Right now I'm aiming for at least one post every other week. Which also means getting into the habit of actually sitting down to write entries, instead of going somewhere/doing something, thinking, "Huh, I should probably post about this," and then forgetting all about it.

2.) Read more. Or read more regularly, I guess. This year wasn't too bad for me, in terms of the number of books I read, but I pretty much quit the habit of reading something just for fun every day. I think part of that's down to the fact that I've been spending more of my free time writing, which is wonderful...Come 2018, though, I want to read more, and read more of the stories I really enjoy. Starting with the pile of Star Wars EU books I just checked out from the library.

3.) Write more, but don't stress about comments and kudos. This is one of the things that I'm really, really terrible at: I still have a hard time shaking the feeling that if a fic I write doesn't get X number of comments or kudos, it can't have been all that good. Which, okay...not all my stories are going to be that good. And that's fine. Writing them is the important part; I love every single comment and kudo I've ever gotten, but going into the New Year I want to spend most of my energy enjoying the process, not worrying about the outcome. (I already have the feeling I'll fail miserably at this, but hey. May as well be optimistic.)

4.) Write better author's notes. Okay, this is sort of ridiculous, but I know of fic authors who always leave the loveliest, most well-thought-out authors notes on their fics, where they explain their influences and why they decided to write this particular story and whatnot, and I feel like that shows a level of planning and thought that I can only aspire to. Also, they're just fun to read. So, going forward more thoughtful, detailed author's notes? Maybe. I guess it depends most on the story.

Okay, four goals that I most likely won't follow up on sounds about right! I hope all you guys have a great New Year. :)
