I can feel an obsession spiral coming on. Also, Annie's rapidly morphing into my favorite character.

One more episode to go with Mob City, which is pretty middle-of-the-road as far as my emotional attachment to the characters goes, but also beautiful and fun and not quite as brutally violent as I was expecting--which doesn't mean it isn't brutally violent, but the trailers always gave me the impression that it's a lot bloodier than it actually turned out to be. And six episodes really doesn't feel like enough. The characters are just starting to come alive for me, and their backstories and motivations are starting to come into play in really interesting ways (at least for Joe and Jasmine, the two characters I ended up most interested in), and I know it's not all going to get wrapped up neatly in the last episode, but oh well. We got what we got.

I also checked out The Big Sleep from the library, since watching Mob City reminded me that I haven't watched a whole ton of classic noir at all. I watched the first half hour or so last night after getting home pretty late, and so far it's just about perfect; I would have watched the entire thing if I hadn't been completely exhausted, and I might try to finish it tonight if I can get some writing done first--otherwise, I absolutely will finish it tomorrow. I never feel like I have a whole lot to say when it comes to classic movies, since pretty much everything there is to say has already been said, but LAUREN BACALL AND HUMPHREY BOGART. They're both wonderful. And that's all I have to say.

Some Stuff

1.) Apparently we'll be getting more snow tomorrow? It's more than cold enough, and I wouldn't mind, even though that would probably mean having to slog through some online classes.

2.) I finished The War That Saved My Life, one of the books recced to me during the Snowflake Challenge, a week or two ago and absolutely loved it; it's historical fiction set during WWII, featuring two neglected city kids sent out to the country and their depressive, prickly, extremely practical and very loving caretaker. It also does not have a depressing ending, despite being a Newbery Honor book, and there's a sequel that I'll hopefully get to sooner rather than later. Next on my list is Beyond the Bright Sea, which[personal profile] theuncertainhour  recommended--more middle grade historical fiction! It sounds pretty much tailor-made to my interests, too, so I'm pretty excited.

3.) Frank & Amy! They're still on my mind. Not that I'm ever a hard sell on found family relationships, but something about this one hooked in and still hasn't let me go. I've already rewatched a bunch of their scenes together, and I should probably just go ahead and rewatch the entire season while I'm at it.

4.) Kind of related to 3.)--I may have gone ahead and bought the first and only season of Mob City off Amazon Prime. At this point I'm ridiculously anxious about the possibility of a third season for The Punisher (even though there's really no reason to be anxious, since it seems like there's a 99-100% chance that Netflix will cancel), so why not distract myself with another short-lived show starring Jon Bernthal? I've actually wanted to watch this one for a few years now--it looks brutal and twisty, and one season isn't a huge time commitment.

For some reason I never got the memo (or else got it then completely forgot) that The Defenders is a miniseries and only eight episodes long. I'm not complaining--it made blowing through the entire thing in two days that much easier. In the end I'm glad that I didn't hype myself up too much for this show, since it's nowhere near as much of an emotional gut punch as Daredevil or Jessica Jones. That's not to say it isn't good, though, and that's definitely not to say that it isn't fun--watching all the banter, eye-rolling, and awkward maybe-found-family-ness was an absolute joy.
Some spoilers )

The only other thing I did a lot of this weekend was reading. I've been on a YA kick lately and just finished The Carnival at Bray by Jessie Ann Foley. Now I'm a quarter of the way through the first book in the Monstrumologist series. The first time I read these books (the first three, anyway; I still haven't worked up the courage to read the last book) I adored them. Now my feelings are a little more complicated, especially towards one of the main characters. The first time around I was on a major Sherlock kick, and the Monstrumologist is similar, personality-wise, toward Sherlock, so I was quick to forgive all the parts of his personality that, a few years down the road and one major Sherlock disenchantment later, aren't quite as funny or charming. I do think that these books get how terrible he can be in a way that Sherlock (so far, anyway) never has. It's been an interesting reread.

Oh, yeah, one last thing--I finally sat down and ordered my textbooks today (classes start in exactly one week). I had barely anything to buy compared to last semester. Since I bought all the books used, the bill wasn't too bad...and then I realized I've gotten to the point where paying over eighty dollars for three used books feels like a bargain. Oh well. It is what it is.

I'm still finishing up the last of the edits on the big bang fic, so here are some quick and dirty fic recs:

Five Times
by Davechicken: (GOTG) This one's been bookmarked on my AO3 profile for a while now. I can't believe I haven't mentioned it here before, because it has some of the best Peter-and-Yondu-related angst I've ever read. Period. It's also under 1,000 words, so if you're looking for a quick but heartwarming/heartbreaking read, I can't recommend it enough.

Experiential Learning by significantowl: (Daredevil) Father Lantom somehow convinces Matt to volunteer as the arts-and-crafts teacher for Vacation Bible School. Honestly, isn't that all the recommendation you need?

In Search of Old Dreams by anaraine: (Labyrinth) Another short-but-sweet story focusing on Toby and his longing for a place and a person he barely remembers. This fic captures the magic and darkness of the movie so well. Plus, the writing's gorgeous.

Tune My Heart to Sing Thy Grace by dynamicsymmetry: (The Walking Dead) A short, heartmeltingly adorable meeting between Daryl and Beth. This one's set around season 4, when everyone at the prison is trying to scrape together some sort of Christmas celebration and actually succeeding. Beth and Daryl have wonderful chemistry, and it's so refreshing to read a fic in this fandom where everybody's happy for once.

Just started catching up on The Walking Dead (I'm about midway through season 6) and good grief, have I missed this show. It's not perfect--to be honest, I liked the earlier seasons better (Side note: my sister and I are, as far as I can tell, two of the only people on the planet who liked season 2). Still, something about TWD keeps drawing me back. I love the creepy-Americana setting to pieces, the villains are usually complicated and sometimes even likable, and all those survivalist-found-family themes are pretty much crack to me. Obviously I've been searching AO3 for some new fics to read (The Walking Dead and The Lord of the Rings were two of the first fandoms that got me into reading fanfic), but I'm having a hard time finding stories that aren't especially shippy and focused more on the friendships within the group.

Writing-wise things have been going a little slowly, since my laptop's internet connection has been wonky for about a week. I just fixed it, so hopefully it'll hold long enough for me to get some stories finished. The third girl!Peter fic is almost done, and I REALLY need to up the word count on my Defenders Big Bang fic.

And, oh yeah, I was so busy whining in my last entry that I forgot to mention that over on Tumblr dis4daria has drawn an absolutely adorable and beautiful portrait of Pete from my girl!Peter series. It was a totally unexpected and wonderful surprise that you can see here

This is the month of bizarre crossovers, apparently.

Sisters by marinarusalka: (Pacific Rim, MCU) Natasha Romanov and Sasha Kaidanovsky are trained together as kids in the Red Room. This fic does an amazing job of blending the two worlds, and Natasha and Sasha's friendship feels exactly right; in some ways they couldn't be more different, but they share a terrible past and understand each other like no one else does.

A Star Among the Moons by theladyscribe: (The Lord of the Rings, Firefly) A super-short two-part crossover that ships Boromir and River Tam. Hey--don't knock it till you've tried it. This pairing is beyond weird, but it just works. River is River, and Boromir's bewildered yet charmed by her. This one's a quick read, and very well-written.

Only Held by Gravity (The Chronal Navigation Remix) by Muccamukk: (The Lord of the Rings, Firefly) A remix of A Star Among Moons that explores juts how River ended up in Middle Earth. This one also goes into a little more detail when it comes to her odd friendship/romance with Boromir, and ends on a perfectly ambiguous note.

I finished season 1 a few days ago. This is one of those shows that, in theory, should have really, really work for me, and for the most part it did. The problem is that I only started to get emotionally involved around the last episode; the story was complete by then, but I still wanted more from the characters. On the other hand, I got eight episodes' worth of murder, dysfunctional families, bromance, folk music, and southern Gothic creepiness. I can't complain too much.

Spoilers (?[not sure that they're all that many, but better safe than sorry]) under the cut.

On a scale of one to ten, I'd give this an eight or so. Maybe a seven-and-a-half? Good enough for a rewatch, but not a story I'm head-over-heels in love with.
maplemood: (outlander)
Might or might not turn this into a monthly thing. I've read SO MUCH good stuff recently and figured it was time to share. It's mostly gen this time around. Also mostly Marvel.

Tough Girl is What I Had to Be by angel_deux: (Daredevil) Set some time after season 2. I'm a sucker for Lisa Castle Lives AUs, and this is one of my absolute favorites. Lots of emotion and heartwarming father-daughter scenes. Plus, it ships Frank and Karen. What more could you want?

Kings Among Runaways by Viva Rocksteady: (Jessica Jones, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) The Jessica Jones/Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt crossover you never knew you needed. Jessica is hard-edged and cynical, Kimmy is as adorable as they come, and their friendship comes off as surprisingly believable.

it's the skin and bones that keep me on the road by impossibleamypond: (Star Wars) A missing scene between Rey and Han. Incredibly well-written and bittersweet.

our lives umbilical by duchamp: (Logan) Set after the movie, and most definitely not an Everybody Lives AU. Laura moves on, but she never quite gets over Logan and what they could have had. Beautifully written. Also very, very sad.
