Hadestown Fic

The man’s a pure fool at least half the time, but Ma and Uncle Zeus and all the rest help her if she doesn’t love him.

I don't know that all too many people on DW are in the fandom, but Hadestown is a Greek mythology (Orpheus and Eurydice, specifically) inspired musical set in a 1930s-era dystopia and it's the bomb. I've been trying to write fic for it for ages. 

(I went back and forth over whether or not I should've put an incest warning in the tags, since Persephone is Hades' niece no matter how you spin their romance, but in the end I decided that it's a pretty well-known part of mythology at this point and also not a huge focus in this particular fic, so.) (Also, people who get super uncomfortable or offended by mythological incest wouldn't [I'm assuming] be reading in the fandom anyway.)

That sounds amazing - it's a musical? I hope it becomes a bit accessible for non theatre goers because I'd be so into that.

You can find the original cast recording on Youtube and Spotify (that's how I listened to it)! It's so, so wonderful--exactly as good as it sounds.

A friend introduced it to me and at first I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not, but after the first couple songs I was hooked. It's both really unexpected and really familiar, which I love. Hope you enjoy the fic!

Do you know if these are all the song from the musical? (I found Hadestown a while back via this animatic and was blown away.)

The original cast recording! I think there might be one or two songs from the musical that didn't make it on there for some reason, but as far as I know it's the most complete version you can find and the one I've been listening to--at some point I might be able to afford to see it live, but that point probably won't be soon. :)

Oh yeah, I love that animatic too! They're a bunch of cool Hadestown ones on Youtube, but that one's definitely my favorite.

(Ahem, I uh - saw your prompts on the badly neglected kmeme and your fic and the username made me think I HAVE READ THIS FIC AND I LOVE IT and so I followed you here. I hope you don't mind a follow because I am eternally hungry for more Hadestown friends.:D) Your Writing is gorgeous.

I go back and forth on whether to tag for him being her (maternal and paternal) uncle, too. Generally, I'll tag for it if I mention the incest, and just kind of skip over it, if I don't. It's pretty easy to figure out, so I imagine most people familiar with the source material will already know it, and those that don't, won't realize it, and thus it probably doesn't need a tag unless you're dwelling on it.

Not at all! Thanks for the follow--I really need more friends to talk about Hadestown with. It's just SO good, and Hades and Persephone especially...I love everything about them. Something about the way they can hurt each other so badly while still loving each other so much just gets me. I'm really glad you enjoyed the fic; I've been trying to write them for a while and this was the story that finally clicked. Hopefully it won't be the last, because like I said, I love them to pieces.

That sounds like a good strategy, and if I end up dwelling on it more in other stories I probably will tag--I'm too much of a mythology purist to change that part of their relationship, but I also wouldn't want anyone to potentially get squicked out by surprise!incest.
